i was actually reading the other day that free radicals play an important role in killing pathogens (including cancer cells) in the body as well, that we are overdoing the antioxidant intake and throwing of the balance of natural decay.  one study showed smokers who took vitamins (E i think) had a higher mortality rate.  so...free radicals help maintain a healthy balance ;)
