Re. goose poo:  Bird droppings can be red-hot with cryptosporidium,
which can cause fatal illness in people with compromised immune
systems.  For people with robust immune systems it can cause bouts of
nausea and diarrhea lasting two weeks to a month.  And it's very
difficult to treat. 

So if there's a plan to compost this stuff:

a)  People with compromised immune systems shouldn't be working with the
material at all.  People with robust immune systems should wash their
hands thoroughly after they work with it.

b)  Avoid creating dust when collecting dried goose poo, because that
dust may infect people nearby.  The simplest way to do this is to spray
some water on dried goose poo before sweeping it up. 

c)  The compost pile should be shielded from wind so it doesn't create
dust, and should be kept at a distance from where random passers-by may
be affected.  Using a closed compost tumbler will solve this if the
quantities are small enough to be processed that way. 

d)  The compost temperature should reach at minimum, the boiling
temperature of water (212 F.) uniformly throughout the pile, for a
minimum of one minute for every area of the pile.  This will require
mixing the pile from time to time, so the cooler surface material can be
moved to the inside of the pile.  This can be done carefully with hand
tools or easily in a closed compost tumbler.  If you can get it to 250
F. and keep it in that range over a few days while mixing it daily,
that'll work well.

And speaking of bird shit, there's a guy who is trying to bring back the
extinct passenger pigeon, by extracting DNA from certain cells in
preserved specimens, and inserting it into a similar species. 

At one time, passenger pigeons were so common and the populations were
so large, that when flocks passed overhead they left deposits of pigeon
poo an inch or two deep in the streets.  Imagine a street suddenly
getting coated more or less uniformly with an inch or two of that
stuff.  Umbrellas and rubber boots would be in season all year, and
bicyclists would carry rain ponchos. 

Just think of the road traffic reports:  "Traffic on 880 is at a
standstill after a flock of passenger pigeons flew over the freeway,
coating windshields and causing dangerously slippery conditions.  There
are numerous fender-benders off to the side, and CalTrans sweepers are
making their way to the scene.  BART is unaffected and on time, so if
you have the option, get on BART and you'll get home faster...."
