You know, building a gel box is really so damn easy, that the only real
question is how cheap and accessible we can make it.

Joseph and I built a gel box from some tupperware and stainless steel wires
at the last Science Hack Day - and then did electrophoresis on some food
dyes with a gel made from food grade agar-agar:
